Industrial memory

On this summer Sunday in Charmes, we walk along the small canal of the Moulin accompanied by the song of the birds. We admire the magnificent trees reflected in the clear water of this stream. At the end of the rue du Moulin, an old building welcomes us: the Battant Ecomuseum. Roger, the guide, is waiting for us: he will take us to a place totally out of time.

Joining some tourists, we start the visit by discovering a temporary exhibition and a model of the Battant site made by a Carpinien* (*inhabitant of Charmes). We then enter the oldest industry in Charmes, in the cool of the place, and watch a short film on the history of this place. The site comes alive before our eyes: we imagine the workers effortlessly operating the deafening machines and the inventors registering their patent. The first trace of activity in Battant dates back to 1580 with the clothiers.

Back to the future

The visit continues with the guide explaining the different functions of the Battant. Everything is left as it was. We see the remains of the 19th century power station: the remains of the electric switchboard used for public lighting, batteries of impressive size, the first light bulbs, etc. Charmes is the second town in France to have been lit. We discover a "wood" toothed turbine from 1894 (replacing the one from 1580) which is still in operation and which stirs the water with a deafening noise, then we head for the director's office !

This Battant was truly a symbol of modernity and the site of many inventions, notably under the figure of Paul Dazet: our little group of visitors is now lingering over one of the first "French" washing machines. Here again, many anecdotes are told and the display cabinets with old documents arouse curiosity.

Roger then takes us to the sawmill, which was in operation until 1997, before finishing with the mechanical workshop producing square screws. Everything is still in working order. It is as if time has stood still. Old posters and a rule book catch our eye: working and safety conditions were very different in the past !

Discovering science at any age

The Battant Ecomuseum is an opportunity to rediscover the past and understand how physics works. We remember our ancestors and understand how the objects we still use in our daily lives were made. A museum to discover with young and old.

After this beautiful visit of about two hours in the past, it was time for a picnic at the pond of Essegney !  We set off again on foot, taking the large bridge at Charmes to reach the Ile-sous-Essegney path. An area preserved for nature, with a beautiful path that will allow us to reach the shaded pond. A beautiful summer day as we like them !

The path of the water

After a barefoot expedition to the Adventure Farm, we decided to continue our discovery of the south of the territory with a visit to the Gentrey Mill, a former 19th century starch factory. We are welcomed to the site by a volunteer from the association "Les Kemottes" (which means "potatoes" in local dialect), which has been working for about ten years to revive this site. He immediately plunges us into the daily life of the Beaudoin family who operated this starch factory until 1967.

We head to the back of the building to find ourselves in a green and peaceful setting and stop for a moment along the canal to listen to the story of the "water path" that once guided the water from the Vôge to the large mill wheel.

We approach this famous wooden wheel and our guide activates the mechanism making it turn at high speed. The water flows over the blades and generates the hydraulic force that produces the energy.

From cellar to attic

We then follow the path of the potato, from the cellar where it was stored to the bagging of the starch obtained after the extraction process. We were amazed to learn that it took five tonnes of tubers to make one tonne of starch !

Everything has remained impactful and functional, the cogs, pulleys, belts and other machines are activated one after the other thanks to the water mill and we manage to put ourselves in the shoes of the workers: it sorted, it washed, it grated, it filtered, it decanted, it dried? Until a fine, white and silky powder is obtained, destined for textile factories, paper mills, glucose factories, etc. Mixed with water, potato starch gave a kind of glue which was used to make the threads more rigid and resistant.

Our guide shows us a lot of unsuspected objects that can be made from starch: bags, water bottles, cosmetics... He even shares a recipe for glue to reproduce at home!

Potatoes with every kinds of sauces

The experience ends in the former straw loft which has been transformed into a reception room. Inside, old agricultural machinery is on display. The authentic and rural setting is ideal for sharing a moment of conviviality with other visitors.

Guided tours are offered from March to the end of October, every Friday and Sunday afternoon. 3 options are available : visit only (5€), with snack (10€), with meal (28€). We opted for the snack option : such a rich and complete visit is very tiring! On the menu: local juice, apple-rhubarb crumble (it's in season), scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream and a potato jam roll cake, of course!

We'll be back soon for a concert, a theme night or a game night over a gratin dauphinois or a nice tray of chips.

A market with a focus on local products and crafts!

A setting conducive to relaxation

For all self-respecting epicureans, local markets and craft markets are a must during our summer holidays to taste local specialities and bring back souvenirs for our loved ones.

In Epinal, these markets are called "Les Merveilleuses Estivales": an evocative name which promises us to spend wonderful moments with our grandchildren. Every Thursday evening from 7 July to 18 August from 4pm to 8.30pm, the Place de l'Atre and Place Edmond Henry are transformed into an open-air market.

These newly renovated squares located at the foot of the majestic Saint-Maurice Basilica in Epinal are ideal for long summer evenings spent strolling around. The fountains that line the building provide a place to cool off: the children have a great time while we contemplate the architecture of the surrounding buildings that make up the city's historic centre.

Gourmet break in the countryside

Pretty white tents form the aisles of this event where local producers and art craftsmen rub shoulders in joy and good humour. Bison sausage, blueberry juice, mirabelle jam, beer, cheese... We are spoilt for choice.

Our senses are awakened by the smells and colours of the stalls. We like to be tempted by a cheese board accompanied by a glass of Vosges blue wine, while the children enjoy a small pot of home-made ice cream. We sit at one of the many tables set up in the heart of the market, decorated with care: beige tablecloth, flower arrangement, jute cloths, wooden logs as centrepieces... The promise of the "country picnic" is kept!

Nearby, a guitarist and singer transports us on pop-jazz notes and we are all surprised to sing along to a cover of Gainsbourg which puts everyone in agreement.

Carefully selected craftsmen

We continue our journey through the stalls and marvel at the work of a blacksmith who forges a barbecue fork before our astonished eyes. Further on, we stop for a few minutes to watch a basket-maker making a basket with an unusual shape. Our grandson even got to try his hand at stone cutting!

This Thursday is dedicated to craftsmen whose trades revolve around heritage, restoration and gardens. Each Thursday is dedicated to a different theme. Next week, it will be the turn of the fashion and textile professions to be honoured. We will be back with pleasure for our little girl who spotted the presence of Pauline Cavret, better known under the name of "Atelier Jiro", a bootmaker & craftswoman who makes shoes and leather jewellery by hand in the Vosges and from whom she hopes to find a unique model.

After this gustatory and sensory journey, we decide to extend the experience by sitting down on one of the many terraces of the nearby restaurants to have a good meal.

Stopover at the Port of Epinal

The weather is nice, it's hot, it's summer in Epinal. The desire to get into the water is felt and after having tested water skiing at the Wam Park in Thaon-les-Vosges last summer, I am impatient to discover with friends the brand new Base Natur'O opened in May 2022.

A simple phone call to the reception of the Base allows me to book our slots for this afternoon. In July & August, the site is open every day from 9.30am to 7pm.

The advisor suggests a multitude of activities: surfing, canoeing, rafting or buoyancy. I opt for the buoy and the equipment rental (optional) for maximum safety. All I have to do now is put on a swimming costume and a long-sleeved shirt, not forgetting my bath towel. The meeting point is at 2pm at the reception of the Base Natur'O. After paying the fee (18€/adult for 1 hour of descent), we are given our entrance tickets.

Freshwather sailor

We then head to the Base's changing rooms where we are given all the necessary equipment: wetsuit and neoprene shoes but also helmet and life jacket. Top time! We have 30 minutes to put it on and get to the poolside.

After a few explanations on the route to follow and the safety rules to adopt in case the boat capsizes, it was time to jump into the water. Full steam ahead! A few paddle strokes in the calm waters of the Moselle are necessary to reach a conveyor belt allowing access to the basin. The tilting and rattling of the mechanism gets the adrenaline flowing and is reminiscent of the lifts on thrill rides. Except for a few details... The descent is very smooth and we slip quietly into the basin. On our left are the pumps that allow it to function, the mechanism is impressive. Let's go for 1 hour of relaxation and pure pleasure!

Smooth docking

We pass the first obstacles without any trouble. After the first bend, the pace quickens, the waves splash our faces and we manage to get through the stages as best we can: forward, backward, sideways... Little by little, we take our marks and learn to handle the paddles.

On the shore, the instructors of the GESN canoe-kayak club are on the lookout, ready to pounce to get us out of trouble at the slightest difficulty and give us some sound advice. By the second run, we are more confident and tackle the waves with a lot of confidence, which leads to a few dives and lots of laughter.

In 1 hour, we managed to complete 4 or 5 laps of the basin and it was already time to dock. We go back to the changing rooms to take a shower and get dressed before a well-deserved snack in the park next to the basin. We decide to continue our journey with a visit to the Image Museum, located just a few steps away.

La patate sous toutes les coutures !

  • Pour vous, Epinal Tourisme c'est : Des trésors historiques à découvrir
  • Votre plat local préféré : Le jus de rhubarbe
  • Votre site touristique local préféré : Le Moulin Gentrey

A building that makes the most of wood

Far from being a great handyman but loving to take up new challenges, I signed up for one of the workshops organized regularly on Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning by the Xylolab.

The workshops can accommodate up to 4 pairs of 2 participants. The appointment was given at 2pm this Wednesday afternoon in the Hotel Innovation Bois, an innovative building architecturally and energetically exemplary, which aims to promote the creation of companies in the wood sector, to be a place of meetings and realizations of projects for both professionals and individuals.

We are welcomed with a coffee in a convivial space where all kinds of wooden objects manufactured by the various companies which took their quarters in this space which has what to allure all the in love ones with wood. A visit of the place follows.

A beautiful gift for the birds

We then go to the workshop where a pleasant smell of wood hovers and where brand new machines are installed. The place is spacious and bright, I feel immediately at ease. It is not cold and a small jacket is more than enough. The place is somewhat noisy when the machines are in action but headphones and earplugs are provided.

I chose the "balcony nesting box" workshop, accessible to beginners and achievable in about 2 hours.

We discover a plan and a "flow sheet" of the balcony nesting box which is almost similar to that of a piece of furniture to assemble oneself: number of pieces, length, width, material... Everything is described very precisely. Our nesting box will be made of Douglas fir, a species that is widespread in the area and naturally resistant to external aggressions.

Cutting, drilling, assembling...

The workshop is divided into 4 main stages: cutting of parts, drilling, assembly and installation.

We start by cutting the pieces of wood needed to make our nesting box with a radial saw. We refer to our bible of the day, our cutting sheet, to measure the size of our pieces with a square. Let's start cutting: dexterity and concentration are required. As I have never handled this kind of machine, I am not very reassured. Fortunately Martin & François follow me closely and give me some advice to adopt the right gestures.

A whole range of state-of-the-art professional machines like you can't find anywhere else (not even at our grandfather's, as handyman as he may be) is at our disposal to allow us to screw and assemble the lower part of the dwelling that will serve as a shelter for our feathered friends. The only thing left to do is to attach the roof, so that it can be opened and cleaned up in the fall!

Mission accomplished

For an even more personalized birdhouse, Xylolab offers to extend the workshop by engraving it with a laser engraving machine: logo, first name, initials... Everything is possible.

All that's left is to install our creations on a tree using old bicycle inner tubes.

We left with some advice on how to maintain our nesting box throughout the seasons and, above all, with a great deal of pride in having made a comfortable space that will welcome new visitors as soon as spring arrives! Radial saw, sliding table saw, drill press or hand-held drill no longer hold any secrets for us.

Boarding at the Port of Epinal

This Sunday afternoon we are welcomed at the nautical base GESN canoe-kayak, located at the Canal Bridge of Golbey (19th century structure), not far from the Port. Before boarding, a few recommendations are necessary. An instructor provides us with the essential equipment to prepare our journey on the water: life jacket, helmet, paddle and boat, but also a waterproof container to keep our personal items safe. We are ready to face the wave!

We have a choice of different routes and different levels of difficulty. For a first, we opted for the green route, called the "nature" loop in autonomy. The price to pay for 2h30 of disconnection in the middle of nature? 15€ for children under 18 or students and 20€ for adults.

Descent between tranquility and thrills

The first few kilometers allow us to get used to our boat and to taste the joys of calm water. Far from the noise of the cars and the hustle and bustle of city life, we enjoy the tranquility. On our way, we have for only traveling companions some ducks as well as cyclists and walkers who traverse the blue way.

Our route map tells us that we have to take our canoes out of the water to pass them on the other side of a small island. Our biceps are put to the test! We arrive in the middle of the Moselle, the current transports us, the wild nature is revealed. In the middle of the trees, sandy beaches are visible and we can see birds flying overhead. We cross the path of a fisherman sitting on his camp chair at the water's edge.

A snack on the Moselle river

During the descent, we discover a more agitated Moselle, which gives us some shivers, especially when we cross the hydroelectric dam of the Gosse! We moor our canoes on a sandy beach: the perfect spot for a well-deserved break! Nearby, we pick some mirabelles to make our snack. Before heading back to our arrival point, we let ourselves be tempted by an invigorating bath in the waters of the Moselle.

Our return is done by the Canal des Vosges and we can moor in all serenity at the Port of Epinal. We get our stuff back, which was kept in a locked locker for the duration of our ride, and enjoy a hot shower, which is welcome after these 2h30 rather sportive.

Guinguette atmosphere at Emile Bonheur

When we arrived at the port, the Maison du Vélo, located not far from the canoe kayak club, suggested that we extend the experience with a ride on an electric bike. The proposal is attractive... Brand new Moustache Bikes were offered to us. However, we give up and postpone it to later: the campaign, it wins you!

We decide to have a good time and to push the door of the restaurant Émile Bonheur, located at the edge of the water. In summer, the place has a terrace and a rooftop with a guinguette spirit where we enjoyed a delicious cocktail and tapas with Vosges flavors while watching the sunset. All this, comfortably installed on a deckchair and in a musical and warm atmosphere.

The allure of a large glass vessel

Looking for an indoor activity to do on a winter Sunday, we discovered the Musée d’art ancien et contemporain (Museum of Ancient and Contemporary Art), located in the heart of Epinal.

More than 30,000 objects and works of art, from prehistory to the art of the 21st century, are preserved in this 4,000m2 building with modern architecture. To our surprise, admission is free on the first Sunday of the month and a guided tour on a different theme is offered.

We are immediately captivated by this open-air museum, with a monumental glass nave.  Arrived at the beginning of the afternoon and the guided tour taking place at 4pm, we are offered audio guides for 1€ extra. We choose this option in order to ensure us an optimal free visit.

Works for all tastes

The museum is spread over three levels: the first floor is dedicated to ancient and Gallo-Roman history; the second floor houses the permanent Fine Arts collections as well as the temporary exhibition of the moment, while the top floor is reserved for an international contemporary art collection.

We start our visit with the permanent exhibitions. The rooms are wide and well lit. We follow a chronological path that invites us to discover some nuggets of world-famous artists such as Rembrandt, Claude Gelée, De La Tour, Newton, Warhol or Villeglé.

During the visit, we are surprised by the variety of the collections, from archaeology to contemporary art. A surprising but pleasant contrast! Like a journey in time, through the centuries.

The beauty of pastels

We end our visit with the temporary exhibition. Until May 5, 2022, the museum is showcasing its collection of pastels. One of the most fragile techniques, sensitive to light but also to vibrations, which makes their presentation rare. We feel privileged to be able to enjoy it!

We enter a dark room with walls painted in a lilac hue that fits perfectly with the theme of the exhibition. The sunlight is filtered through images on the windows, giving us a mysterious and intimate atmosphere.

About thirty unpublished works are revealed, we are amazed by the quality and diversity of this collection.

Between city and garden

At the back of this room, we discover the main room of this exhibition: The Closed Eyes of Odilon Redon. Landscapes with impressionist accents compose the continuation of the exhibition with the works of Victor Guillaume then the still lifes of Étienne Cournault. To close the exhibition, a small abstract pastel by Zoom Walter testifies to the fascination of contemporary artists for this technique.

The least we can say is that this museum is full of treasures. We put nearly 2:30 am to see everything, the afternoon passed at full speed. We recover our personal stuffs remained in safety in the lockers dedicated to the entrance of the museum, then we regain our car parked near, on the carpark of the Champ de Mars. On the way back, a ray of sunshine allows us to enjoy a walk in the Parc du Cours, a 28-hectare English-style park located on the banks of the Moselle. It is confirmed, Épinal does not miss attractions! We will have to come back soon to discover the other secrets the city has in store for us.
